FINE ART STUDIO & GALLERY

CUSTOM WOODWORKING SHOP

Carolyn Findlay, a long time member of the National Society of Decorative Painters and the Dogwood Decorative Artists Guild and a founding member of the Dragonfly Ladies social Art Club with her husband John, are longtime owners of Cactus Station Woodworking & Fine Art Studio. A home-based studio tucked in the small village of Cloverdale in the Fraser valley, Cactus Station is renowned for its exquisite setting, excellent light, and its warm and friendly ambience - in fact, many of the best artists call Cactus Station their 'second home'! Carolyn and John strive to ensure all feel welcome and encouraged: coffee, tea and afternoon snacks are always available.

It is easy for artists to feel at home, as Carolyn and John's garden is a painting in itself - glorious flowers everywhere you look, birds singing in the trees, an enchanting pond with golden fish sparkling in the sunlight, two lovely, welcoming Cocker Spaniel dogs and, in Carolyn's words, "a fat old studio cat who thinks she owns the place!" The art studio's windowed walls and skylights add the most perfect natural light to lay expressions of colour on a variety of surfaces - an activity that has occupied Carolyn pretty much her entire life.

Some of Carolyn’s certifications in Sue Scheewe watercolours, Bob Ross oils, Mary Owens pen & ink techniques, as well as being a Deco Art Traditions Teacher, has worked well with her university art degrees to enhance her skills as a designer & teacher. Carolyn's philosophy of sharing her years of accredited skills and knowledge, along with her willingness to critique the work of students and artists in a helpful and supportive manner, has made her a much sought-after art instructor for all ages in schools and private studios both at home and abroad. Keeping her skills up-to-date and current helps Carolyn not only motivate her students, but remain fresh herself. "You never stop learning," says Carolyn, "which is why we operate Cactus Station as an educational learning centre for adults who want to learn to paint or learn to paint better, so that they can become the finest artist they can be!"

While Carolyn works the brush, John works in his wood working shop, where he creates an incredible array of wood surfaces from boxes, stools and chairs, to blanket chests, trays, turntables, fireplace screens, picture frames and much more.  John's imagination is endless and his skill is most impressive. Many of John's creations are set up in the display room at Cactus Station, and make inspiring 'easels' for artists at work!

Classes in watercolour, acrylic are offered on a variety of surfaces such as canvas, fabric, stone, slate, gourds, glass, ceramic and, of course, John's wood creations
